چکیده

In the most prominent current scenario of galaxy formation, galaxies form hierarchically through the merger of smaller systems. Such mergers could leave behind dynamical signatures which may linger long after the event. In particular, the globular cluster system (GCS) of a merging satellite galaxy may remain as a distinct sub-population within the GCS of a massive galaxy. Using the latest available globular cluster velocities and metallicities, we present the results of a search for grouping in the GCS of our nearest large spiral galaxy neighbor, M31. A modified friends-of-friends algorithm is used to identify a number of possible merger remnants in projected position, radial velocity and [Fe/H] parameter space. Numerical simulations are used to check that such merger remnants are indeed plausible over the timescales of interest. The identification of stellar streams associated with these groups is required in order to confirm that they represent merger remnants.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

I present the preliminary results of a program to measure the star formation history in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy. Using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, we obtained the deepest optical images of the sky to date, in a field on the southeast minor axis of Andromeda, 51′ (11 kpc) from the nucleus. The resulting color-magnitude diagram (CMD) contains appr...

A new look at globular cluster colors in NGC 3311 and the case for exclusively metal – rich globular cluster systems

A new look at globular cluster colors in NGC 3311 and the case for exclusively metal–rich globular cluster systems ABSTRACT NGC 3311, the central cD galaxy in the Hydra cluster, was previously thought to host the most metal–rich globular cluster system known. Ground–based Washington photometry had indicated the almost complete absence of the population of globu-lar clusters near [Fe/H] ∼ −1 dex...

UBRI Photometry of Globular Clusters in the Leo Group Galaxy NGC

We present wide area UBRI photometry for globular clusters around the Leo group galaxy NGC 3379. Globular cluster candidates are selected from their B-band magnitudes and their (U–B)o vs (B–I)o colours. A colour-colour selection region was defined from photometry of the Milky Way and M31 globular cluster systems. We detect 133 globular cluster candidates which, supports previous claims of a low...

The globular cluster system around the low - luminosity S 0 galaxy NGC 7457

We investigate the globular cluster system around the low-luminosity S0 galaxy NGC 7457 with deep B, V, I photometry. From the V photometry the total number of globular clusters around the galaxy is estimated to be 178 ± 75. The specific frequency is estimated to be SN = 2.7 ± 1.1 adopting MV = −19.55 mag for the galaxy. We select 89 globular cluster candidates on the basis of their colors (B-I...
